Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Johnnie Carson and Ambassador Princeton Lyman briefed reporters on the Southern Sudan independence referendum. They said the voting in South Sudan was going very well with only a handful of disturbances reported. The vote was part of a 2005 peace agreement that ended two decades of civil war between the north and south. close
