Nuclear specialists talked about the impact of the nuclear plant crisis in Japan as a result of the country’s 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Alexey Yablokov, who studied the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, said the situation in Japan was particularly dangerous because of the highly concentrated populations near that country’s damaged nuclear plant. He also talked about a new study on Chernobyl. It suggested that as many as 1 million people had died because of the explosion at the Soviet-era plant 25 years ago. close
