Michael Swetnam talked about President Obama’s expected announcement later in the day of his nominations of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Leon Panetta to replace retiring Defense Secretary Robert Gates and General David Petraeus to head the CIA. He also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. President Obama was also expected to replace General Petraeus with Lieutenant General John Allen as Afghanistan commander, and name Ryan Crocker as the new U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan.
