The Senate Commerce Committee held a nomination hearing for John Bryson to be secretary, and Terry Garcia deputy secretary of the Commerce Department. Mr. Bryson said that businesses were too often stifled by unnecessary government regulations. He also explained his past support for regulating carbon emissions through a cap and trade system and offered his opinion on an ongoing dispute between the National Labor Relations Board and Boeing. Senate Republicans had threatened to block Mr. Bryson’s confirmation until the completion of several free trade agreements. close
