A group of House and Senate Republicans spoke to reporters about their support for the passage of legislation that would require the Treasury secretary to prioritize payments for debt service, Social Security, and military pay in the event the debt limit is reached. Republican Study Committee Chair Jim Jordan said that he thought Speaker Boehner lacked the needed House Republican votes to pass his debt ceiling plan, and that he opposed it because it did not cut spending enough and or require a balanced budget. close
