Eurozone Debt Crisis
French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a news conference following their meeting to address the European debt crisis following a week of turbulence in the global financial markets. They announced a series of proposals that included a Europe-wide financial transaction tax, and a requirement of all eurozone countries to establish balanced budget laws by mid-2012. They also proposed a plan to establish an economic council in the 17-member eurozone with an elected president. close
