Charles Abbott talked about federal government farm subsidies, and he responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. The federal government spends about $20 billion annually for financial assistance to farmers; however, both the Obama administration and the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction are proposing cuts to subsidies. Mr. Abbott discussed the types of subsidy programs and the effect on growers if they lose their subsidies.

This program is part of C-SPAN’s “Your Money” series, which looks at how taxpayer dollars are spent. Most Monday mornings, some of the last hour of “Washington Journal” is devoted to a federal program, focusing on its mission, participants, and cost. close
