Julia Scheeres presented a history of Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple, a church that attracted hundreds to Guyana where 909 members died in a mass suicide and Congressmen Leo Ryan and others were assassinated on November 18, 1978. Ms. Scheeres recounted Jim Jones' life, including his early progressive politics in Indiana, his appointment as the chairman of San Francisco’s Housing Authority by then Mayor George Mocscone, his psychological issues and drug use, and the final days at Jonestown, the church’s compound in Guyana. Ms. Scheeres talked about the research process, and choosing five representative people to profile. She also responded to questions from members of the audience at Books Inc. in Berkeley, California. close
