The new British Defense Secretary, Philip Hammond, testified for the first time before a defense parliamentary committee. He took over from Liam Fox, who resigned in October 2011 amid claims he broke the ministerial code of conduct. Mr. Hammond discussed the the impact of cuts in the defense budget and laid out his priorities for 2012. He was asked about the timetable for withdrawing British combat forces from Afghanistan by 2014 and on the operational strength of Britain’s aircraft carriers. close
