Eisenhower: The White House Years
Jim Newton recounts the tenure of President Dwight Eisenhower (1953-1961). The author refutes the commonly held criticism that President Eisenhower was complacent by citing his transformation of an $8 billion deficit to a $500 million surplus, the creation of an interstate highway system, and the president’s constant refusal to utilizethe atomic bomb when pressured by his generals. In his talk Mr. Newton focused on the president’s appointment of Chief Justice Earl Warren and the Brown v. Board of Eduction decision. Jim Newton also responded to questons from members of the audience at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kansas. close
