A House-Senate Conference Committee met in an attempt to break the deadlock over a Social Security payroll tax cut extension. In December 2011 Congress passed a two-month payroll tax cut extension. Democrats proposed taxing income earners over $1 million while Republicans wanted the cost to be offset through spending cuts. The extension expires on February 29th. Conferees also discussed differences over unemployment insurance and Medicare. close
