J. Lee Thompson talked about his book Theodore Roosevelt Abroad: Nature, Empire, and the Journey of an American President. In the book, Professor Thompson not only traced the adventures of Roosevelt’s fifteen-month post-presidential odyssey to Africa and Europe but also his periods of doubt on the trip about his conservationist legacy and how he came to believe that President Taft was undermining that legacy. This partly lead to former President Roosevelt’s return to the American political scene, when he challenged President Taft as a third party candidate in the 1912 election - ultimately playing a part in Woodrow Wilson’s election.
