Former Ambassador Thomas Pickering made opening remarks at a forum on the political and economic climate in the Middle East. He said Syria was on the verge of becoming a “genocidal state,” and he dismissed the idea of using force in response to the government’s violent crackdown in that country. He also suggested that the international community should find ways to unify different Palestinian factions in order to help the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. close
