General John Allen and Undersecretary James Miller testified on operations in Afghanistan. Among the topics they addressed were the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the country by 2014, as well as the killing of Afghan civilians by an American soldier. General Allen said the mission in Afghanistan was on-track, and expressed confidence in the 2014 withdrawal deadline, saying he had seen no indication from the Obama administration of a push to speed up the withdrawal. He downplayed Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s recent call for foreign troops to withdraw to their bases. close
