Representatives Ed Markey (D-MA) and Henry Waxman (D-CA), the leading congressional investigators into the BP oil spill, reacted to the settlement reached between BP and the Department of Justice related to criminal charges and fines for the company’s 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The 14 charges included 11 counts of manslaughter and one of obstruction of justice. BP agreed to a $4.5 billion settlement which would be disbursed to federal agencies for restoration, preservation, and conservation. Investigations into other civil and criminal charges remained open. close
