Haitian President Michel Martelly addressed the European Parliament. He thanked the European Union for their continued support to Haiti and discussed the challenges facing the country. Mr. Martelly is Haiti’s first head of state to address the European Union. Since the 2010 earthquake which devastated the island and left thousands homeless, the European Union has provided close to $415 million dollars in humanitarian aid. The Haitian president added that humanitarian aid is not enough, and urged European Union members to also support “productive work, trade and direct investments.” close
