Jay Carney briefed reporters and answered questions. He told reporters that President Obama made calls earlier in the day to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner about the sequestration spending cuts set to kick in March 1, 2013. He also said that President Obama would “absolutely not” withdraw his nomination of former Senator Chuck Hagel to be the next defense secretary. Earlier that day, 15 Republican senators called on President Obama to withdraw his nomination. The Senate was expected to vote on the nomination during the next week.

“Sequestration,” a legal procedure in which automatic budget cuts are triggered, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011. close
