Secretary of State John Kerry and first lady Michelle Obama honored recipients of the 2013 International Women of Courage Award. The annual award recognizes women from around the world who have shown courage and leadership advocating for women’s rights. Michelle Obama highlighted the importance of the award in opening eyes to injustices. Secretary Kerry emphasized that advancing the status of women and girls was central to America’s foreign policy. He also announced the launch of a new Full Participation Fund for achieving gender equality. Secretary Kerry read biographies of all the award recipients and award recipient Fartuun Adan spoke about her advocacy work with women. This event took place in the Dean Acheson Auditorium of the State Department. close
