Veterans, mental health advocates , and Veterans Affairs (VA) officials testified on their efforts to improve access to and the quality of mental and physical health care services for veterans. Since the start of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq suicide and post traumatic stress disorder rates among veterans had increased significantly. Topics included new VA mental health programs, using smart phone technology to stay connected with veterans after they return home, the stigma of seeking mental health assistance, providing veterans with a sense of mission and peer support in their communities, and alternate mental health approaches. close
