Three scholars talked about the lessons that could be learned from the war in Afghanistan. They examined what went wrong and how to avoid those mistakes in the future. Topics included Ambassador James Dobbins, the U.S. representative at the December 2001 Bonn Conference where the international community determined to end the conflict in Afghanistan, speaking on inadequate forces and resources; Rajiv Chandrasekaran, who reported from Afghanistan and Iraq, saying that the U.S. squandered the first year of President Obama’s surge; and Colonel Gian Gentile, a former Army Combat Unit Commander in Baghdad, on why U.S. strategy in Afghanistan and Iraq did not work. They responded to questions from members of the audience.
