Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Martin Dempsey testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on the Defense Department’s fiscal year 2014 budget request. Secretary Hagel reiterated his warning that there’s a $22 billion budget shortfall. General Dempsey said that the department is not sure how the shortfall will impact military readiness but warned, “right now we’re consuming readiness not producing it.” close
