President Obama spoke to researchers and scientists about the importance of investing in scientific research and innovation even while the country went through economic hardships. He talked about the impact of the budget sequester on the scientific community, at one point joking that National Academies of Sciences volunteer scientists were needed because “we have no money anyway.” He also talked about protecting peer review systems and investing in research beneficial to tax payers. The president spoke at the annual meeting of the National Academy of Sciences in celebration of its 150th anniversary. close
