Doris Kearns Goodwin, author of Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, delivered the keynote address at the “New Birth of Freedom” Commemorative Ceremony at Gettysburg National Military Park, honoring the Battle of Gettysburg, which took place 150 years ago on July 1-3, 1863, and is considered the bloodiest battle ever on U.S. soil. The ceremony also included performances by the United States Military Academy Orchestra and country music artist Trace Adkins, a dramatic reading of eyewitness accounts of the battle, and a candlelight procession to the Soldiers' National Cemetery to see luminaries marking each of the more than 3,500 graves of Union soldiers killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. close
