The third evening of the Republican National Convention focused on “family values,” and featured speeches on the importance of family by public officials and Republican party members. Speeches included remarks on the importance of family by Governor John Ashcroft of Missouri, and criticism of the Democratic Party by Rev. Pat Robertson. Rev. Robertson, Republican candidate for president in 1988, discussed the spending habits of Congress and speculated that Democrats must be “smoking funny cigarettes” when making their spending decisions. Remarks by Governor George Voinovich of Ohio and Governor Pete Wilson of California lauded the “family values” of the Bush administration, such as their position on education and parental child support. Gov. Wilson spoke from Sacramento, California. close
