Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Martin Dempsey spoke to reporters in the Pentagon briefing room. Secretary Hagel announced that President Obama was nominating General Dempsey for a second term as chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He said that the Pentagon would move swiftly to implement that day’s U.S. Supreme Court decision which extended federal benefits to same-sex spouses of military members. Other topics included U.S. policy toward Syria and the impact of the unauthorized disclosure of National Security Agency (NSA) programs on national security and military relationships. close
