Catholic legal scholars talked about the legal and religious issues from the U.S. Supreme Court’s rulings on two same-sex marriage cases the previous week. The justices invalidated a provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that prevented married gay couples from receiving a range of tax, health, and retirement benefits that are generally available to married people and overturned Proposition 8, California’s ban on same-sex marriages. Topics included the impact on procreation, religion, future laws on marriage, and the “collapse of marriage culture” in the United States. “Marriage and the Law” was a program of the Catholic Information Center. close
