Senate Select Committee on Intelligence member Ron Wyden (D-OR) talked about National Security Agency data collection programs, focusing on the balance between national security and privacy. He warned that the U.S. could become a “surveillance state” with the government tracking citizens through their smart phones. He called for reforms to reduce the scale of government’s surveillance powers. He accused senior intelligence officials of deliberately misleading the public about the scope and effectiveness of the data collection programs revealed by NSA contractor Edward Snowden. close
