Representative John Conyers (D-MI) held a town hall meeting on the implications of the Detroit bankruptcy filing. Earlier this summer, Detroit became the largest municipality in U.S. history to file for bankruptcy citing $18 billion in debt. Moderator Michael Eric Dyson and a panel of clergy, lawyers, union leaders, and public officials took questions from the audience in the James E. Wadsworth, Jr. Community Center of Fellowship Chapel in Detroit. Topics included the bankruptcy’s impact on retirees' pensions, taxpayers, and municipal workers, the legality of the filing, and calls for the state or federal government to bail out the city. close
