Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman testified at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on the status of Iran’s nuclear program. Other witnesses included former Obama and Bush administration State Department officials as well as former nuclear arms inspector David Albright. Ms. Sherman, who took part in Secretary of State Kerry’s meeting at the United Nations with Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif, said that the Obama administration would support additional pressure on Iran if it did not reduce its nuclear program, but also urged Congress not to pass new sanctions against Iran until after a meeting with Iranian officials in Geneva on October 15, 2013. She also said the government shutdown is “hampering” her office’s efforts to enforce sanctions against Iran including restricting the sanctions team’s travel to nuclear sites overseas. close
