Simmons College held a forum honoring women in politics and Angelina Grimke, a white Southerner from Charleston, South Carolina, who became the first American woman to address a legislative body. Ms. Grimke spoke about slavery and women’s rights before the Massachusetts State Legislature in 1838. The event included an actress' dramatic reading of Ms. Grimke’s speech. Other speakers included Gloria Steinem; Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who participated via video uplink from Washington, D.C.; and Ayanna Pressley, the first woman of color ever elected to the Boston City Council. The program concluded with a panel discussion on women in public affairs. close
