C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2013 LCV Cities Tour” in Helena, Montana, from October 7-11 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Author and Historian Ellen Baumler talked about her book, Dark Spaces: Montana’s Historic Penitentiary at Deer Lodge, in which she chronicles the history of the Montana Territory’s first federal penitentiary. Established in 1870, the penitentiary was built mostly by prison laborers under the direction of its long serving warden Frank Conley. This prison experienced a violent history including the infamous riot in 1959.
