Academics were joined by Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, who was killed in Sanford, Florida, and by Lucia McBath, the mother of Jordan Davis, who was killed in Jacksonville, Florida, testified about “stand your ground” self-protection laws. At the time 30 states had some type of “Stand Your Ground” laws on the books. They allowed a person the right to use deadly force to protect themselves if they thought their life was in danger. The hearing focused on the origins of those laws, their impact on the legal definition of self-defense, whether they provoke unnecessary shooting confrontations, and if they encourage racial profiling. close
