The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Town of Greece v Galloway, docket number 12-696, a separation of church-and-state case regarding prayers said before a town council meeting in upstate New York. This case examined whether there should be different rules for local council meetings where citizens come to ask for official actions. The court would also consider if opening a government meeting with prayers from one faith was essentially identifying with a specific religion and would violate the Constitution’s First Amendment ban on a government establishment of religion.
