The National Book Foundation presented the 2013 National Book Awards at a ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. The Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community was presented to poet Maya Angelou and the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters to E.L. Doctorow. Finalists for the non-fiction category were George Packer for The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America, Jill Lepore for Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin, Alan Taylor for The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia, 1772-1832, Wendy Lower for Hitler’s Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields, and Lawrence Wright for Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief. During the ceremony’s dinner break, Book TV book discussion excerpts were shown from the nonfiction finalists. close
