Mr. Deveney, a worker in the Sinn Fein party in Northern Ireland, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army, spoke in Belfast on life in Northern Ireland and his work for the party. He talked about the relations between the Catholics and Protestants in Belfast, and gave a brief history of recent events in the conflict in Northern Ireland. Mr. Deveney also gave a brief tour of the Shortstand neighborhood in Belfast, a predominantly Catholic neighborhood in Northern Ireland, point out the evidence of violence and separation between the Catholics and Protestants in Belfast. Several of Mr. Deveney’s acquaintances discussed their defenses against violence in their homes in Shortstrand and notable acts of violence they have experiences in their neighborhood. close
