Nathan Hutltman talked about the national energy policy and environmental implications. The U.S. State Department issued an environmental impact statement the previous day concluding that the Keystone XL pipeline would not substantially worsen carbon pollution. Secretary of State John Kerry would study the report before making a recommendation on the international project to President Obama. The main toic was the growth of hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” in the U.S. to extract natural gas. It has pushed the U.S. toward energy independence but there are environmental issues. Professor Hultman responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. He also reacted to telephone reports by Associated Press Pittsburgh correspondent Kevin Begos about the state of the fracking industry in Pennsylvania and from Gannett Albany Bureau capitol correspondent Jon Campbell about the situation in the State of New York. close
