Edith Mayo, Anita McBride, and Richard Norton Smith looked back at the year-long C-SPAN series, “First Ladies: Influence and Image,” and responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. Richard Norton Smith participated by video link from Lawrence, Kansas. They provided an overview of the series, focusing on some of the more well-known first ladies, and on how the role of women and the role of first lady had evolved throughout U.S. history. Highlights from the series were shown, including guests, vignettes, and video clips of first ladies. Also shown was an interview with Don Levy, director of the Siena Research Institute, giving the results of the Siena/C-SPAN First Ladies Poll ranking the first ladies. Members of the C-SPAN staff who worked on the program were introduced. close
