Maraschino Cherries and the Cherry City
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Salem, Oregon, from February 3-6 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Tim Ramsey, president and CEO of Oregon Cherry Growers, talked about the company, the largest producer of sweet cherries. He also spoke about the history of the maraschino cherry and why Salem, Oregon, is called the “Cherry City.” Originating in Croatia, the maraschino cherry became popular in the rest of Europe during the 19th century.
