The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Utility Air Regulatory Group v. EPA, on the Environmental Protection Agency’s regulation of greenhouse gas emissions. The case was consolidated with several other appeals into one. In 2007 the court decided that the EPA could regulate greenhouse gases for motor vehicle emissions. The justices were considering whether the EPA misused that authority by imposing permit requirements on power plants and factories.

On June 23, 2014, the court ruled 5-4 that the EPA exceeded its authority by changing the emissions threshold for greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. close
