Historian Carol Berkin talked about her book, Wondrous Beauty: The Life and Adventures of Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, in which she recounts the life of Elizabeth “Betsy” Patterson Bonaparte, one-time wife of Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother, Jerome, and a native of Baltimore, Maryland. In her book, the author reports on the diplomatic fissures that surfaced between the United States and France following Napleon’s orders to his brother to dissolve the marriage, and Betsy’s successful campaign to seek a pension from the French general upon her return to Baltimore.
