Professor James Tobin talked about the life of World War II reporter Ernie Pyle and his influence on war reporting. President Truman once called Ernie Pyle the “spokesman of the ordinary American in arms.” Pyle’s accounts emphasized the human element of the war, the fraternalism between soldiers, and their patriotism on and off the battlefield. Professor Tobin also explained how Ernie Pyle’s work during World War II continued to influence American war reporters during the Vietnam War and beyond. This class was from an introductory course on journalism at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. close
