The 1972 documentary The Distant Drummer: Flowers of Darkness traces the history of opium and the development of heroin. The film describes how organized crime transports the drug to the United States, depicts the problems of heroin addiction, and relates the history of government strategies for combating the problem. The film was narrated by actor Paul Newman, and was sponsored by George Washington University and the National Institute of Mental Health. The film was followed by a February 2014 C-SPAN Washington Journal clip in which USA Today correspondent Donna Leinwand Leger talked about heroin abuse. close
