The Hidden White House
Robert Klara talked about his book, The Hidden White House: Harry Truman and the Reconstruction of America’s Most Famous Residence, in which he recounts the physical improvements made to the White House in 1948. In his book, the author reports on the decampment of President Harry Truman and his family to Blair House during the reconstruction, which consisted of a gutting of the entire interior of the building and the addition of a steel frame and an underground shelter.
