Myra MacPherson talked about her book, The Scarlet Sisters: Sex, Suffrage, and Scandal in the Gilded Age, in which she recounts the lives of sisters, Victoria Woodhull and Tennessee “Tennie” Claflin, whose professional and political pursuits challenged the male-dominated status-quo of the late nineteenth century. The sisters were active in business, politics, and publishing. They the first women to open a brokerage firm in 1870, and with Frederick Douglass as her running mate, Victoria was the first woman to run for president. As publishers, they were the first female publishers of a weekly newspaper. Myra Macpherson spoke at Books and Books Bookstore in Coral Gables, Florida. close
