Machine Made Terry Golway talked about his book, Machine Made: Tammany Hall and the Creation of Modern American Politics, in which he recounts Tammany Hall politics in New York City. In his book, the author contends that the political machine that controlled the city’s Democratic Party in the 19th century has been miscast as crooked. Instead, he asserts that Tammany Hall afforded immigrants to New York a political voice and was responsible for social and political reforms, including greater worker’s compensation and a ban on child labor. Terry Golway spoke at the Irish Arts Center in New York City. close
