The Edison's of Fort Myers Tom Smoot talked about his book, The Edisons of Fort Myers, in which he discusses Thomas Edison’s love of Fort Myers and his impact on the growth of the city. Edison first visited the town in 1885, purchasing a winter residence known as Seminole Lodge that he and his family would use until his death in 1931. His Fort Myers home provided a setting for the many notables who visited Edison, including Henry Ford, Harvey S. Firestone, and John Burroughs.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Fort Myers, Florida, from March 16-21 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2. close
