Alvin Townley talked about his book Defiant: The POWs Who Endured Vietnam’s Most Infamous Prison, the Women Who Fought for Them, and the One Who Never Returned. In his book he recounts the imprisonment of American soldiers in Hanoi during the Vietnam War, namely eleven men who were singled out by the North Vietnamese as leaders of a resistance movement. The author reports that these men, dubbed the “Alcatraz Eleven,” were placed in solitary cells, where they faced repeated physical and mental torture. Ten of the soldiers returned home, including future Senator Jerry Denton and U.S. Representative Sam Johnson. Alvin Townley spoke at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida. close
