Evan Osnos talked about his book, Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China, in which he describes the rising conflict between the individual and the Chinese government. Mr. Osnos, who spent 8 years living in China as a correspondent for New Yorker magazine, spoke about his perspectives on China’s changing economy, government, culture, and idea of the individual. He reacted to clips of the viral video, “China Stand Up!", which vilified imperialism and western media and influence and to other clips. Mr. Osnos also talked about the Chinese government’s views on individuals such as the Dalai Lama and Ai Weiwei, who the government regards as threats, as well as Chinese "angry youth” who were defending their government and resisting calls for democracy. In addition, Mr. Osnos talked about the people he encountered in China, such as Michael, an English language teacher, street sweeper, and poet, and Lin Yifu, chief economist of the World Bank. close
