Alex Beam talked about his book, American Crucifixion: The Murder of Joseph Smith and the Fate of the Mormon Church, in which he recalls the assassination of Mormon Church founder Joseph Smith in a jail in Carthage, Illinois, on June 27, 1844. In his book, the author reports on the lead-up to Smith’s death, from his arrival in Illinois following prior stops in Ohio and Missouri to the strained relationship between the Mormon population and their neighboring denizens. Mr. Beam also examines the criticism Joseph Smith faced from within the Church over polygamy, a debate that continued following his death.
