The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral argument in the case Riley v. California. The plaintiff, David Riley, was convicted on several criminal counts, based on evidence from a cell phone seized in a traffic stop. The court was to decide what types of Fourth Amendment protections should be extended to data stored on smart phones.

The court on June 25, 2014, ruled 9-0 that a warrant is required to search a mobile phone. close
